History on Residential School
The first Residential School was created in 1620 near Quebec city, In 1780 is when it was seen to start affecting the Aboriginal Peoples and their educational teaching, leaders had engaged in neogation for a equatiable education for all. It wasnt until 1831 when the New world had arrived that it started afffecting the Aboriginal traditional belifs. The new world started to take over and convert Aboriginal peoples to christianity. Going into the nineteenth Century is when more residential schools were becoming open. In 1876 became a struggle for Aboriginals peoples , when the indian act came into play and it gave government rights to create legsilations for "indians and indian land". Their voice began to be silenced and the western culture began to take over. Going into the twentieth century the residential school system hit its peak in 1931 when there were about 1,100 students that attended 69 schools across the country.there were about 80 schools operating in Canada. There were a total of about 130 schools in every territory and province except Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick from the earliest in the 19th century to the last, which closed in 1996. Residential schools were not like every other school there were many children abused for being aboriginal, they had their childhood taken away from them, their families and their friends. Many were adopted or fostered by western families and were forced into adapting to their culture. These children were dehumanized by the colour of their skin and their cultural background. Still today many stigmas hurt the First nations populations and many are still healing from the trauma
